Law, technology, operations: The GEIG amendment for site operators

The GEIG amendment is currently delayed in the legislative process. For many property owners, this feels like a reprieve. In reality, the deadline remains unchanged: the new requirements for existing non-residential buildings must be met by January 1, 2027, at the latest. In our webinar, we brought together experts in law, technology, and operations to clarify the best starting point for companies.

Sebastian Helmes (Dentons) provided an overview of the legal situation: for existing buildings with more than 20 parking spaces, one charging point per 10 spaces will be required in the future, along with lower thresholds, a pre-cabling obligation, initial requirements for charging capacity, and smart charging as the standard. Violations can result in fines of up to 10,000 euros, and GEIG compliance is increasingly being scrutinized during real estate transactions.

Timo Schwab (ChargeX) illustrated this with a practical example: for a commercial property with 350 parking spaces, the law would have required 35 charging points, while the actual demand from tenants was 60.
